El Call — Barcelona's Medieval Jewish Quarter
Barcelona, Spain
About This Activity
El Call Major was the heart of Barcelona's Jewish community from the 9th to 15th centuries, producing major scholars like Nahmanides (Ramban). Walk the cramped medieval streets, visit the MUHBA El Call interpretation center (€2) housed in the former home of a Jewish weaver, and see the remains of the ancient synagogue on Carrer Marlet — possibly the oldest in Europe (3rd-4th century foundations). The 1391 pogrom destroyed this community; the 1492 Edict of Expulsion ended Jewish life in Spain entirely.
Seasonal note: Year-round; spring and autumn most pleasant for walking the narrow lanes
