Bačvice Beach & Picigin Game
Split, Croatia
About This Activity
Bačvice is Split's most famous beach — a sweeping arc of sand just a 10-minute walk from the city center, unusual on this otherwise rocky Dalmatian coast. Its shallow turquoise water is ideal for swimming and for watching picigin, a uniquely Splićan sport: groups of players keep a small ball airborne in ankle-deep water with acrobatic slaps — a UNESCO-protected intangible cultural heritage since 2011. The beach is lined with shaded bars and restaurants. Picigin is most energetically played by locals on weekend mornings. Arrive before 10am or after 5pm in summer to secure space on the sand.
Seasonal note: Best for swimming June–September; picigin played year-round by dedicated locals even in winter
