Salona Ancient Ruins
Split, Croatia
About This Activity
Salona (modern-day Solin) was the capital of Roman Dalmatia and birthplace of Emperor Diocletian — the man who later built the palace that became modern-day Split. At its peak it housed 60,000 inhabitants. The sprawling archaeological site includes a forum, amphitheatre, temples, early Christian basilicas, and an extensive necropolis. Far less visited than Diocletian's Palace yet historically more significant, Salona rewards the curious traveller. Entry is €8 for adults and €4 for children. A short bus or taxi ride from Split (7km/Solin bus stop); best visited in the morning light before the heat builds.
Seasonal note: Open year-round; the exposed site is best visited in spring or autumn to avoid summer midday heat
