About This Activity

Founded in 970 AD, Al-Azhar Mosque is among the oldest continuously operating universities in the world and the spiritual center of Sunni Islam. Non-Muslims are welcome outside prayer times; modest dress and removing shoes is required. The surrounding Islamic Cairo district (Al-Qahira al-Fatimiyya) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing hundreds of medieval mosques, mausoleums, and madrasas along Al-Muizz Street — once described as an 'open-air museum' by UNESCO. Walk north from Al-Azhar along Muizz Street past the Qalawun Complex, Beit al-Suhaymi (an Ottoman merchant house), and the Fatimid-era gates of Bab al-Futuh and Bab al-Nasr. The walk takes 2-3 hours and is best done in the morning.
