About This Activity

Khan el-Khalili has been Cairo's main commercial and social hub since 1382, when Mamluk emir Djaharks el-Khalili established a caravanserai on this site. Today it sprawls over dozens of narrow alleys, filled with shops selling spices, perfume oils, silver jewelry, papyrus art, alabaster figurines, and hand-hammered copper. The historic El-Fishawy Café — open nearly continuously since 1773 — is the perfect pit-stop for tea and shisha amid ornate mirrors and hanging lanterns. Bargaining is expected and prices start 2-3x higher than fair value. Visit in the evening when the bazaar comes alive with locals and the call to prayer echoes from Al-Azhar.
