Dhobi Ghat Open-Air Laundry
Mumbai, India
About This Activity
Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, built in 1890, is the world's largest open-air laundry — where over 7,000 washermen scrub, boil, and beat the clothing and linens of Mumbai's hotels, hospitals, and households in hundreds of concrete pens. The overhead viewpoint from Dr. E Moses Road bridge is free; for a closer look, descend from Mahalaxmi station (Western Line). Go between 8–11 AM when activity peaks. Informal guides at the gate charge ₹100–200 and add good context; optional but recommended.
Seasonal note: Best October–March. Monsoon (June–September) reduces washing volumes as lines can't dry properly; the ghat is less colourful but still atmospheric.
