Marrakech Mellah & Lazama Synagogue
Marrakech, Morocco
About This Activity
The Marrakech mellah was established in 1558 and became one of the largest Jewish quarters in Morocco. Today it houses the bustling spice market (Mellah Market) and the Lazama Synagogue — a blue-tiled 16th-century synagogue still used for occasional services. Visit the Miaara Jewish Cemetery, one of the largest and most atmospheric in North Africa, with thousands of whitewashed tombs. The mellah's distinctive architecture (balconied houses facing outward, unlike the inward-facing riads of the medina) is still visible.
Seasonal note: Best Oct-Apr; early morning visit avoids market crowds and summer heat
