About This Activity

Rangitoto erupted just 600 years ago and is Auckland's youngest and largest volcanic cone, now a protected nature reserve. The Fullers ferry from the city takes 25 minutes; round-trip tickets are NZ$53 per adult. Hike 4km to the 260m summit — allow 3 hours return on well-formed lava-field tracks. The summit yields 360-degree views across the Hauraki Gulf, city skyline, and Coromandel. The lava fields support one of the world's largest pohutukawa forests. Bring water and sturdy shoes — there are no shops on the island.

Seasonal note: Best Oct–Apr when weather is warm and dry. Winter hikes are possible but lava tracks can be slippery after rain.
