The Algarve is Portugal's seafood paradise. Cataplana — a copper-pot stew of clams, shrimp, chorizo, and white wine — is the region's signature dish. Try it at A Forja in Lagos or O Camilo perched above Praia do Camilo. For simpler fare, the grilled sardines and fresh-caught sea bass at local tascas (taverns) are superb. Pair with Vinho Verde or a local Algarve white wine. Budget 20-35 EUR per person with wine.
Seasonal note: Year-round; fresh sardine season peaks June–September when the classic grilled sardine is available everywhere. Cataplana (copper-pot seafood stew) is available all year. Clam season is spring–autumn.
