The Elaphiti archipelago northwest of Dubrovnik offers a counterpoint to the city's intensity: three car-free islands with sandy coves, pine forests, Renaissance summer villas, and fishing villages where time moves slowly. Day cruises depart from Dubrovnik's Old Port, stopping at each island for swimming, a fish-focused lunch at a konoba on Šipan, and exploration of Lopud's lanes. Lopud's Šunj Beach is one of Croatia's finest sandy beaches, accessible on foot across the island.
