Lokrum Island lies just 600m offshore from Dubrovnik's Old Town — a 15-minute ferry ride to a verdant nature reserve where cars and permanent residents are prohibited. The 19th-century botanical gardens established by Archduke Maximilian of Austria are home to free-roaming peacocks. Ruins of a 12th-century Benedictine monastery house a Game of Thrones exhibit featuring the original Iron Throne. The Dead Sea salt lake (Mrtvo More) provides sheltered saltwater swimming; climb Fort Royal for the finest views back toward the Old Town. Round-trip ferry ticket (€30) includes island entrance.
