Chouara Tannery Viewpoint
Fes, Morocco
About This Activity
The Chouara Tannery is the largest and oldest of the three tanneries in Fes, operating since the 11th century. From leather shop terraces above, you look down on a remarkable sight: workers knee-deep in a honeycomb of stone vats filled with vivid saffron, indigo, poppy, and mint dyes, using methods virtually unchanged for a thousand years. Access is free but expect to tip 20-50 MAD at the leather shop terrace. You will be offered a sprig of mint to offset the pungent smell of the pigeon-dung curing process.
Seasonal note: Best morning light for photos; smell stronger in summer heat
