Royal Palace Gates (Dar el-Makhzen)
Fes, Morocco
About This Activity
The Royal Palace of Fes, or Dar el-Makhzen, occupies a vast 80-hectare compound in Fes el-Jdid. While the palace itself is closed to visitors, the seven monumental brass doors framed by zellige tilework and carved cedarwood are a dazzling sight. The elaborate geometric patterns and gleaming gold leaf represent the pinnacle of Moroccan decorative arts. Combine with a stroll through the adjacent Mellah (Jewish quarter) and its spice market.
Seasonal note: Year-round; best light in morning for photography
