Fez Jewish Cemetery & Haim Ben Diwan Shrine
Fes, Morocco
About This Activity
The Jewish cemetery on the hillside above the Fez mellah is one of the largest in North Africa — thousands of whitewashed tombs span centuries of Fez's Jewish history. Nearby, the shrine of Rabbi Haim Ben Diwan draws Jewish pilgrims annually from Morocco and Israel for a hilloula (celebration) each spring. Morocco uniquely preserved its Jewish saints' shrines even after most Jews emigrated — King Mohammed V's protection of Jews during WWII and Mohammed VI's restoration of Jewish heritage sites make Morocco an exceptional case in the Arab world.
