Fez Jewish Mellah & Ibn Danan Synagogue
Fes, Morocco
About This Activity
Fez created the world's first mellah (Jewish quarter) in 1438, and at its peak housed 250,000 Jews. Walk through the old quarter near the Royal Palace, visit the restored Ibn Danan Synagogue (17th century, small donation) with its subterranean mikveh (ritual bath), and see the vast Jewish cemetery on the hillside — one of the largest in Morocco. Most of Fez's Jewish population emigrated to Israel after 1948, but the architecture and street names preserve their 600-year presence.
Seasonal note: Best Oct-Apr; summer heat can be intense in the mellah's narrow streets
