About This Activity

The 45-minute drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy along the western shore of Lake Wakatipu is one of New Zealand's finest short drives — the lake shimmers jade and turquoise with snow-capped peaks reflected at every bend. Glenorchy is a tiny township at the lake's northern tip, surrounded by mountains and wetlands used extensively as Lord of the Rings filming locations. From here, the Paradise road leads through a cattle station to a beech forest glade used as Isengard, Lothlórien, and Amon Hen. Self-drive is free; dedicated LOTR tours depart from Queenstown. A lakeside café in Glenorchy rounds off a perfect day.

Seasonal note: Accessible year-round; summer gives the clearest mountain reflections; autumn (Mar–May) adds golden foliage to the valley
