About This Activity

Bo-Kaap (meaning 'Above Cape' in Afrikaans) is one of Cape Town's oldest and most photographed neighborhoods. Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, its steep cobblestone streets are lined with candy-colored houses — hot pink, cobalt blue, lime green — that have stood since the 1760s when the area was settled by freed slaves brought from Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and other Dutch colonies. The neighborhood is the heart of Cape Town's Cape Malay community, and the air is fragrant with spices. Visit the Bo-Kaap Museum to understand the history, and stop for koesisters (spiced sticky pastries) at a local bakery.
