About This Activity

District Six was a vibrant, multi-racial inner-city neighborhood of Cape Town home to 60,000 people — until the apartheid government declared it a 'whites-only' area in 1966 and demolished it. By 1982 a thriving community had been bulldozed and its residents scattered across the Cape Flats. The District Six Museum, housed in a former Methodist church, is one of the most powerful testimonies to the human cost of apartheid. Former residents have donated street signs, photographs, and personal items; many visit the museum and recount their experiences in person. A profoundly moving and important stop in understanding South Africa's history.
