About This Activity

Malasaña was the epicenter of Madrid's countercultural Movida Madrileña movement of the late 1970s and today remains the city's most creative and youthful neighborhood. Wander past colorful street art, vintage shops, independent bookstores, and third-wave coffee roasters. The heart is Plaza del Dos de Mayo, ringed with terrace bars and commemorating the 1808 uprising against Napoleon. Evening brings out craft beer bars and cocktail lounges. The neighborhood pairs well with adjacent Chueca, Madrid's LGBTQ+ quarter.

Seasonal note: Year-round. Best explored late afternoon into evening. Summer terrace season makes Plaza del Dos de Mayo particularly lively.
