About This Activity

Derinkuyu is the deepest and most impressive of Cappadocia's 200+ underground cities. Carved into the soft volcanic rock, this subterranean labyrinth extends eight floors down to a depth of 85 meters. Ancient inhabitants — possibly early Christians fleeing persecution — built living quarters, stables, wine presses, churches, and ventilation shafts. Massive rolling stone doors could seal each level from invaders. The underground church on the lowest visitable floor is remarkably well preserved.

Seasonal note: Year-round; cool underground temperature
