Göreme Open Air Museum
Capitol Reef, Turkey
About This Activity
The Göreme Open Air Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Cappadocia's most important cultural attraction. This monastic complex carved into volcanic tuff contains over 30 rock-cut churches and chapels dating from the 10th to 13th centuries. The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) preserves vivid Byzantine frescoes in near-original condition thanks to minimal light exposure — it requires a separate €6 ticket. The Apple Church, Snake Church, and Buckle Church each feature unique iconography depicting biblical scenes in rich blues, reds, and golds. Open daily 08:00-17:00.
Seasonal note: Best Apr-Jun and Sep-Nov; summer heat makes outdoor walks tiring
