About This Activity

Merano (Meran in German), 30km north of Bolzano by a direct 30-minute train, is one of South Tyrol's most charming destinations — a Belle Époque spa town set in a mountain valley, famous for the Terme Merano thermal baths complex and its riverside Passer promenade. The town grew as a 19th-century health resort favored by Austro-Hungarian aristocracy, including Empress Sisi of Austria who wintered here. Today visitors come for the thermal pools (indoor and outdoor, mineral-rich spring water), the Tappeiner Path alpine promenade above the town, the historic Kurhaus concert hall, and some of the best Michelin-starred dining in the region. The town's mild microclimate allows palm trees and citrus to grow alongside Alpine conifers — a genuinely surprising botanical juxtaposition.

Seasonal note: Year-round; summer best for outdoor activities; December for Christmas markets
