About This Activity

Runkelstein Castle (Castel Roncolo in Italian) stands on a rocky promontory north of Bolzano's old town, a 15-minute walk or short bus ride from the center. Built in 1237, the castle houses one of Europe's largest and best-preserved cycles of secular medieval frescoes — vivid 14th-century paintings depicting courtly love, Arthurian legends, hunting scenes, tournaments, and the lives of heroes from Germanic and Italian romance literature. Unlike most medieval art (which is religious), these frescoes offer a rare window into noble leisure culture of the Middle Ages. The approach through a riverside park with views of the vineyards climbing the valley walls makes the visit as pleasurable as the destination.

Seasonal note: Year-round; closed Mondays; summer best for outdoor approach; December Christmas markets nearby
