About This Activity

La Salute was commissioned by the Venetian Senate in 1631 as a votive offering after the city lost 46,000 people to plague — its octagonal plan topped by a great dome has anchored the entrance to the Grand Canal for nearly 400 years. The sacristy holds Titian's St. Mark Enthroned and three ceiling paintings by him, plus Tintoretto's Wedding at Cana. Entry to the church is free; the sacristy costs €4. The annual Festa della Salute on 21 November sees a pontoon bridge built across the Grand Canal for a procession still led by the Doge's successors.

Seasonal note: Year-round; Festa della Salute on 21 November is uniquely atmospheric
