About This Activity

The Venetian Republic confined Jews to this island in Cannaregio in 1516, creating the world's first ghetto (from the Venetian 'geto' meaning foundry). The campo still has the original gates and the tallest buildings in Venice — Jews built upward because they couldn't expand outward. Visit the Jewish Museum and join a guided synagogue tour (€12, hourly) covering 3 of the 5 historic synagogues: the Schola Grande Tedesca (1528), Schola Canton, and Schola Italiana. The community of ~450 still maintains an active synagogue.

Seasonal note: Open year-round; best spring and autumn
