Skippers Canyon 4WD Adventure
Queenstown, New Zealand
About This Activity
Skippers Canyon is one of New Zealand's most dramatic off-road experiences — a steep schist gorge following the Shotover River, so narrow and precipitous that most rental car companies prohibit the road. The canyon was New Zealand's richest gold-producing area; at its 1860s peak the area had thousands of residents. Guided half-day 4WD tours in specialised vehicles cover the history and scenery, reaching Lighthouse Rock for views over the entire valley. Note: Skippers Bridge has been closed indefinitely since early 2026 due to structural failures in its suspension cables — tour routes are adjusted accordingly. Adult tours from NZ$178 per person.
Seasonal note: Tours run year-round; road can be affected by heavy rain or snow in winter — check conditions with operator
