About This Activity

The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III sitting at the entrance of his now-destroyed mortuary temple. Each statue is 18 meters tall and 720 tonnes. In antiquity, one of the colossi was famous for emitting a musical sound at dawn (likely caused by the cracking of damaged stone as temperature changed), drawing visitors including Roman emperors. Today they're an essential stop at the start of any West Bank tour, located at the entrance to the necropolis area. Free to view from outside; walk up for a closer look (no admission required). Combine with the recently opened Amenhotep III temple excavation site nearby.
