Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
Luxor, Egypt
About This Activity
Deir el-Bahari ('the Northern Monastery') houses the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, one of Egypt's greatest pharaohs who ruled as king for 22 years from around 1479 BC. The three-tiered colonnaded structure rises dramatically from the Theban escarpment, its clean horizontal lines still breathtakingly modern-looking 3,500 years after construction. The Punt Reliefs in the middle portico depict Hatshepsut's famous trading expedition to the land of Punt (modern Ethiopia/Eritrea area). The colonnaded sanctuary of Anubis retains some original paintwork. Combined West Bank tour (Valley of the Kings + Hatshepsut + Colossi of Memnon) is the most efficient way to cover Luxor's West Bank. Admission 200 EGP.
