About This Activity
Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district — a preserved neighborhood of traditional machiya wooden townhouses, exclusive ochaya teahouses, and intimate restaurants. Walk Hanamikoji-dori at dusk (6–8 pm) when geiko and maiko in elaborate kimono walk to evening engagements. The street is free to walk at any hour; discreet photography from a distance is acceptable. July brings the Gion Matsuri festival, Kyoto's biggest celebration, transforming the whole district.
