About This Activity

The Philosopher's Path follows a narrow canal for 2 km through northern Higashiyama — named after philosopher Nishida Kitaro who walked it in contemplation. Start at Ginkaku-ji Silver Pavilion (¥500), follow the tree-lined canal to Eikan-do with its autumn maple gardens, and finish at Nanzen-ji where a 19th-century brick aqueduct frames a striking industrial contrast. Best in late March during cherry blossom peak and November for maple foliage; flat and easy terrain.

Seasonal note: Cherry blossoms late Mar–early Apr; maple foliage Nov — most beautiful in these seasons
