Kiyomizu-dera Temple & Higashiyama District
Kyoto, Japan
About This Activity
Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most iconic temples, sits majestically on a hillside with a famous wooden veranda offering panoramic views of the city below. Founded in 778 and rebuilt in 1633, this UNESCO World Heritage site features intricate wooden architecture and a sacred waterfall with pure spring water believed to grant wishes. The surrounding Higashiyama district enchants visitors with narrow, lantern-lit streets lined with traditional shops, pottery studios, and tea houses selling local ceramics and sweets. Plan 2-3 hours including the climb from the main street and exploration of the atmospheric alleyways.
Seasonal note: Cherry blossoms Mar–Apr and autumn foliage illuminations Nov–Dec (extended evening hours); open daily 6 am–6 pm year-round
