Kiyomizu-dera Temple & Sannenzaka Heritage Walk, Kyoto
Kyoto, Japan
About This Activity
Kiyomizu-dera (¥500 adults) stands on a hillside east of Kyoto, its famous wooden stage cantilevered 13 m over the valley without a single nail — the UNESCO-listed temple dates to 778 AD. Descend through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, 400-year-old stone-paved lanes lined with craft shops, teahouses, and lacquerware, ending at Yasaka Shrine in Gion as lanterns glow at dusk. Allow 3–4 hours; the temple is open daily from around 6 am to 6 pm (extended hours during illumination seasons).
Seasonal note: Cherry blossoms Mar–Apr; autumn illuminations Nov; avoid midday crowds
