About This Activity

Kyoto's yudofu (simmered tofu) tradition is one of Japan's most naturally gluten-free dining experiences. Restaurants near Nanzen-ji temple — notably Okutan (Japan's oldest tofu restaurant, established 1635) and Tousuiro — serve multi-course tofu kaiseki meals with simmered silken tofu, sesame dipping sauces, pickles, and seasonal side dishes, all wheat-free. Request tamari instead of standard soy sauce to ensure complete GF compliance. A full tofu course costs ¥3,500–6,000 per person. The Nanzen-ji setting — red lacquer bridges, temple gardens — makes this one of Kyoto's most memorable meal settings.

Seasonal note: Year-round; most atmospheric in spring and autumn
