About This Activity

The Philosopher's Path is a serene 2-kilometer walking trail alongside a cherry tree-lined canal in Kyoto's eastern Higashiyama district. Named after Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida who walked here daily to meditate, the path connects Ginkakuji Temple to Nanzenji Temple, passing charming teahouses, hidden temples, and traditional wooden homes. Spring cherry blossoms are spectacular, but the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty make it wonderful year-round. Allow 1-2 hours for a leisurely walk with photo stops at scenic bridges and temple views.

Seasonal note: Cherry blossoms early Apr peak (400 trees along the canal); autumn maples turn mid-Nov; beautiful and peaceful any time of year
