Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a)
Amman, Jordan
About This Activity
Jabal al-Qal'a — the Citadel — is the oldest continuously inhabited part of Amman, perched on the city's highest hill at 850m. The compound holds layers of history spanning 7,000 years: Bronze Age walls, a Roman Temple of Hercules with its iconic hand, an Umayyad Palace complex from the 8th century, and the Jordan Archaeological Museum. The views across Amman's white stone hillside neighborhoods are extraordinary, especially in the late afternoon light. The Jordan Archaeological Museum on site houses artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic era, including the Ain Ghazal statues — among the oldest human statues ever found.
