Roman Theatre of Amman
Amman, Jordan
About This Activity
The Roman Theatre is Amman's most striking Roman monument — a massive 6,000-seat amphitheatre built during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–180 CE). Cut into the northern slope of a hill, the theatre is remarkably well preserved and still used for concerts and events today. The surrounding Philadelphia Plaza contains two small museums: the Folklore Museum and the Popular Traditions Museum, which showcase Jordanian folk dress and Bedouin culture. The theatre sits in the heart of downtown Amman, making it easy to combine with the nearby souks and the Citadel.
