Jerash Roman Ruins Day Trip
Amman, Jordan
About This Activity
Jerash (ancient Gerasa) is one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman cities in the Middle East and arguably in the world — often called the 'Pompeii of the East'. The site includes a spectacular oval forum, colonnaded streets, baths, temples, theatres, and triumphal arches that were almost perfectly preserved under desert sands until excavation began in the 20th century. The Jordan Pass (which covers most tourists' Petra entry) also covers Jerash. From Amman, the site is 48km north, accessible by JETT bus (1 JD each way) or taxi. Allow 3-4 hours to explore the ruins. The annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts in July brings performances to the ancient theatres.
